20 March 2007
The life science IP commercialisation company, Aitua Limited (“Aitua”), is delighted to announce that it has invested in Altacor Limited (“Altacor”) a new specialty pharmaceutical company in the area of therapeutic ophthalmology.
Ophthalmology is an area where there is an increased medical need due to the ageing population, the growth of laser surgery and improved screening for eye disease. Altacor has an experienced management team led by Dr Fran Crawford which is actively sourcing products and enabling technologies to treat eye diseases. Initially the company will focus on:
- dry eye, which is caused by surgery or too few tears
- glaucoma, which can lead to tunnel vision and,
- retinal diseases such as age related macular degeneration, which is a major cause of blindness in the UK.
Dr Catherine Beech, CEO of Aitua commented,“Blindness and other eye diseases are a major cause of suffering for many people. We are delighted to be able to invest in Altacor which is a specialty pharmaceutical company with unique skills and expertise in this therapeutic area.”
Dr Fran Crawford, CEO of Altacor remarked, “We are very pleased to have Aitua as an investor in our company. The funding we have raised will allow us to continue to develop and market a range of exciting products to treat ophthalmic diseases.”
Aitua invested in Altacor as part of an oversubscribed angel-led round. This highlights the confidence and excitement that the investment community has in this company and its management team.
