CTM Biotech Acquisition to Boost Growth for Alpha Biologics
19 February 2007
Babraham BioConcepts Limited (“BioConcepts”) is pleased to announce the sale of portfolio company CTM Biotech to Alpha Biologics Sdn Bdh (“Alpha”) of Malaysia. The transaction marks BioConcepts’ first exit since its launch in October 2006. It is BioConcepts’ aim to create and nurture emerging companies and enable them to develop and grow.
CTM Biotech is a specialist process development company based on the Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge, and was one of a portfolio of investments used to establish BioConcepts. Alpha is a UK- and Malaysian-based contract manufacturer of biological products. As a result of the acquisition, Alpha Biologics’ European HQ will relocate immediately to CTM’s present facility, and CTM founders Jon Mowles and Rod Smith have been appointed by Alpha Biologics as Commercial Director – Europe, and Director of Process Development, respectively.

Alpha Biologics was established in 2003 with the support of the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA). Construction of the company’s $18 million manufacturing facility in Penang is scheduled for completion towards the end of 2007, with full scale production expected to commence early – mid 2008. As well as forming Alpha’s European HQ, the Babraham facility will be used as a training base for scientists and technologists recruited locally in Malaysia.
Catherine Beech, Chief Executive of BioConcepts, said:
“The synergy between Alpha Biologics and CTM Biotech provided the team with a wonderful opportunity. As part of a larger organisation, CTM will be able to use their expertise covering a wider range of the development process. It is BioConcepts’ first exit and I am pleased with the outcome of the deal. I am sure that the CTM team will benefit from this acquisition and I wish them every success for the future.”
Commenting on the acquisition, Simon Saxby, Chief Executive at Alpha Biologics, said:
“The significance of this deal cannot be underestimated. The ability to offer clients process development and scale up services has been our main strategic aim for some time now and fits perfectly with our existing focus on cGMP manufacturing. I am delighted that we have secured such an experienced, Cambridge-based team. They have strengthened our position in the market considerably and with their relevant industry knowledge, are set to make an immediate impact.”
